Toys can be too big or too small for your child to grasp. Adding a handle of some type can make things easier. The Pua bath toy above was too large to be picked up with one hand. I drilled holes in the head and added a linking ring (the kind that keep the baby's rattle on the car seat). The puzzle above has small pegs. When the pieces are pulled out it plays a nursery rhyme. By adding the beads or craft spools the child can grasp the pieces or simply knock them out of place to play the music by themselves.

I am an occupational therapist with over 30 years of pediatric experience. I currently work predominantly with children who have cerebral palsy and other neuromotor difficulties. I love to help children who have the most challenging bodies participate in their world, especially through play. I scour local thrift stores to find toys that provide a lot of fun without a lot of hand skills or can be easily (and cheaply) modified for that purpose. Archives
